The West African Monetary Union (WAMU), is comprised of eight member countries located in West Africa. These include:

- MALI
- BURKINA
- NIGER
- COTE D’IVOIRE
- SENEGAL
- GUINEA-BISSAU
- TOGO
The Central Bank of West African States (BCEAO), was established as the common central bank of the WAMU member States. It is in charge notably of managing the common currency of its member countries, the African Financial Community franc (CFA franc) as well as defining and implementing their common monetary policy.
The BCEAO developed financial soundness indicators and hence requires that all MFIs report either monthly, quarterly or annually according to certain requirements and standard formats.
